Vacha Resource Centre

Dombivli, Mumbai

Area: 460 sqft

Year: 2021

This project – for Vacha- an NGO working to empower women and girls in bastis, was done entirely with packing crate wood purchased by weight. The wood was polished using water based nontoxic polish. The spaces were designed to adapt for multiple uses from computer classes to board meetings. It is equipped with a TV for teaching and projections and pin up boards and writing board. This wall livens up the space with colourful pin up boards, paint and posters.

This space acts as a resource centre for the girls from the nearby bastis – where they attend English classes, computer classes along with many other life skills. The walls were adorned with posters designed for Vacha workshops. One of them shows the late Founder Sonal Shukla in conversation with the feminist Gloria Steinem on her visit to Vacha. There are also a number of women who have excelled in different professions whose names on posters adorn above the bookcases.
