Tokhaar

Prithvi Theatre & NCPA, Mumbai

Set Design

Year: 1999

The horse mask was to play a pivotal role in the staging of Tokhaar – Sitanshu Yashashchandra’s Gujarati adaptation of Peter Shaffer’s drama Equus directed by Naushil Mehta. This is the design: from the page to the stage.

The stage is set, the stage within the stage is set, the horse masks in wireframe are mounted, the actors enter this arena – this was a set design for a play performed at Prithvi Theatre and NCPA (TATA theatre) by Vikalp.

Each of the wireframe masks would be adorned with silver paper before every show. The padded horse masks were then strapped and mounted onto the black clad actors who played the horses.

The platform on the stage with two benches, has a rhythmic wooden railing. It becomes a setting for the different locations in the play.
